Bolt a light bar to your truck and the spot you choose settles two things at once. It sets how far the beam reaches down the trail. It also sets how the color strip looks to everyone who walks up to your truck at a meet.

Run every candidate spot through five checks:

Front Bumper: The Easiest Place to Start
The front bumper earns its place as the default. The bar sits low and forward, below the hood line, so the hood never catches the beam. It lights the road straight ahead, and the trip to the battery under the hood is short. A color-chasing strip here also faces anyone who walks up to the front of the truck.
Many aftermarket bumpers come with light bar tabs built in. A factory bumper usually needs a bracket. Keep the bar clear of the openings that feed air to the radiator.

Grille: A Clean, Protected Install

Rear Bumper: Light for the Hitch and the Bed
A short bar on or above the rear bumper lights what sits behind the truck: the hitch, the trailer tongue and the bed after dark. The wire follows the frame back from the battery, a long but simple run.

A-pillar mounts carry a long bar across the top of the windshield, near roof height without a rack. You get much of the roof's reach, and you inherit its trade-offs: noise, hood glare and a long wire run.

Before You Bolt It Down
