Edit Page Control Panel

The glow is the easy part. Keeping Jeep Wrangler rock lights glowing through mud, water, and gravel is an install job. XKGLOW's warranty page says so plainly: it does not cover improper installation, or water intrusion caused by incorrect installation or sealing. Plan on 2 to 3 hours, the time XKGLOW rates for the XKmax RGBW rock light kit, and work in order.

XKGLOW's own mounting instructions run six steps, from a bench test to the final battery connection, and this guide follows them. The kit is universal fit, and XKGLOW's install video covers Jeep JK, JL, and JT models in under nine minutes.

What You Need Before You Start

The kit ships with the extension wires, switch harness, grommets, screws, T-tap connectors, and end caps the steps below use. You supply the rest:

  • Scotch or painter's tape for a trial layout
  • A drill, plus a 1/2-inch bit for through-hole wiring
  • Pliers to close the T-tap connectors
  • Nuts and bolts, only if you prefer them to the screws in the kit
  • Your phone, with the XKmax app

If you are still choosing between the 4, 8, and 12-piece, the Jeep rock lights buyer's guide compares them.

Step 1: Test Every Pod on the Bench

Before anything gets drilled, plug every pod together, then connect the chain to the controller and the switch harness. Connect the harness's red terminal to the positive pole of a 12V battery and the black terminal to the negative. Turn on the switch and press the controller's touch button to run every light.

A dead pod is far easier to swap now than once it is bolted behind a panel. If one fails, XKGLOW's manual says to contact them for a replacement.

Step 2: Plan Your Jeep Wrangler Rock Light Layout

Disconnect the pods from the battery, remove any bodywork that will sit in front of them, and clean every mounting surface. Then tape each pod loosely in place with Scotch or painter's tape. Do not attach anything firmly yet. Reconnect power briefly and test the chasing patterns, so you see how the color flows from the spots where the pods will actually sit.

XKGLOW's diagrams put the controller up front and run one lead down each side of the Jeep, with Channel A feeding the left side and Channel B the right. How many pods ride each lead depends on the kit:

KitControllerPods per sideOpen channels
4-piece2-channel2None
8-piece2-channel4None
12-piece4-channel6C and D

On the 12-piece, XKGLOW's diagram labels channels C and D as optional upgrades, so add-on pods already have a place to plug in.

Step 3: Mount the Pods

XKGLOW designed the pod for easy surface mounting, with two ways to run the wire. The surface route sends the wire through the channels in the rubber grommet and out the sides of the pod. Follow those channels, because skipping them can pinch or break the wire when you screw the pod down. If you can reach the back of the panel, use through-hole wiring instead: drill a 1/2-inch hole in the center of the mounting spot and feed the wire through to the rear.

Either way, seat the grommet, fit the pod, check that no wire is pinched behind the housing, and drive in the self-tapping screws. Nuts and bolts work too. Check what sits behind a panel before you drill or drive a screw.

Step 4: Connect and Secure Every Plug

Plug the pods, extension wires, and switch harness together.

Do not force the plugs together. If a connector will not snap together, check that the pins line up and straighten any that sit out of place.

The connectors have mounting tabs. Screw them down or zip-tie them to the Jeep, or cut a tab off to fit a tight space, and keep every wire clear of anything hot or moving. Mount the ON/OFF switch somewhere dry and reachable. Cover every uncovered connector with an end cap.

Step 5: Tap the Sensor Wires (Optional)

The controller has three sensor wires that let the pods react to the Jeep. By default, red is brake, yellow is left turn, and black is right turn. Seat a T-tap on the matching Jeep wire, squeeze the tab shut with pliers, and slide the sensor wire onto the tap. Confirm what a wire does before you tap it.

You can reassign any of them later. In the XKmax app, open Config, tap Sensor Wires, and pick a wire to change what it triggers, such as a courtesy light. Note which color you tapped to which function, because the app asks for the wire by color.

Step 6: Connect Power and Pair the XKmax App

Firmly connect the red terminal to the battery's positive pole and the black terminal to the negative, then power on. Download the XKmax app, tap the unpaired controller, and hold your phone to it until pairing finishes. Every kit ships with a pre-configured light map called the Kit Preset. To load it, open Config, tap More, choose Load Kit Preset, and scan the QR code in your instructions.

That light map matters. The controller only lights pods the map lists, so if it has power and the pods stay dark, open Config, then Connect Lights, and confirm every pod appears. On the same screen, click a chasing line between pods to split them into zones. One controller runs up to 10 zones, and each zone gets its own number on the color palette.

Pair a key fob under Config, Remote Key Fob, Pair New. One controller takes up to four fobs, and the 12-piece kit includes one. If setup goes sideways, hold the controller's touch button for 7 seconds to reset it, then reload the Kit Preset.

Add More Pods to Your Jeep Wrangler Rock Lights

The pods daisy-chain through plug-and-play input and output connectors, so the install is not a ceiling. XKGLOW puts the limit for one XKmax system at 30 pods and sells add-on pods separately. Each channel is rated for 60 watts, so keep the total on any one channel under that rating. Plug the new pods in, then add them to the light map.

Before You Close Everything Up

Photograph the finished wiring. XKGLOW's warranty page says coverage applies to properly installed products and that XKGLOW can request proof of proper installation. Then register the kit, and check the product page for its warranty terms. Cycle through a few themes too, so a loose plug or an unmapped pod shows up now instead of on the trail.

Rock lights are usually the first piece of an XKmax build, and the rest runs from the same app. The guide to the best LED lights for your Jeep shows where grille pods, fender vents, and body strips fit. Build yours today.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you install Jeep Wrangler rock lights?

Low along each side of the Jeep, in a line from front to rear. That is the layout in XKGLOW's wiring diagrams, with Channel A feeding the left side and Channel B the right. Tape the pods in place first and test the chase patterns before you drill anything.

How hard are rock lights to install?

XKGLOW rates the XKmax rock light kit at 2 to 3 hours. The pods plug together, the battery connection is two terminals, and the sensor taps use included T-tap connectors. If vehicle wiring is new to you, the product page points to XKGLOW's dealer locator for install help.

Do rock lights need a relay or a switch?

XKGLOW's wiring diagram shows no relay. The harness runs to the battery's positive and negative poles through its own ON/OFF switch. Day to day you can turn the lights off in the app, and when the Jeep will sit for a long stretch, XKGLOW recommends the physical switch, which cuts power completely.

How do you connect rock lights to an app?

Download the XKmax app, tap the unpaired controller, and hold your phone to it until pairing finishes. Then load the Kit Preset by scanning the QR code in your instructions, so the app knows where each pod sits. A pod missing from the light map stays dark.

Can you add more rock lights to a kit later?

Yes. XKmax pods daisy-chain through plug-and-play connectors, and one system expands up to 30 pods. Keep each channel under its 60-watt rating, then add the new pods to the light map in the XKmax app so the controller lights them.
