Edit Page Control Panel

Park your Tacoma at camp after dark, open the XKmax app, and the ground around the truck fills with color that moves along both sides. Tacoma rock lights you can program from your phone deliver exactly that.

Search the term and page one is mostly kits sold for the Tacoma, plus owner threads trading opinions. XKGLOW doesn't sell a Tacoma kit. Its XKmax RGBW LED Rock Light Kit is universal, and its product page covers Jeeps, trucks, cars and ATVs without naming a model.

So the real question is how a universal kit goes onto your truck. The best starting point is XKGLOW's instruction sheets: each kit size has its own top-down wiring layout you can transfer to a pickup.

What a Universal Kit Means on a Tacoma

The product page describes universal fitment for almost all types of vehicles. Nothing on it mentions the Tacoma or Toyota, and every layout in the wiring diagrams is drawn on a Jeep-style outline. For you, that comes down to three practical points:

  • You choose every mounting spot. No Tacoma bracket or part is listed. Each pod fastens with the supplied self-tapping screws, or with nuts and bolts you provide.
  • You pick the wiring method pod by pod. For a surface mount, the wire leaves through channels in the pod's rubber grommet. Where you can reach behind a panel, drill a 1/2-inch hole and pass the wire straight through.
  • The layouts are patterns, not measurements. The diagrams show which wheel or corner each pod sits near, and you carry that pattern over to your own frame and body.

The trade is planning time for a platform. You get addressable RGBW pods, XKmax app control and a chain that grows to 30 pods, and every kit size runs the same system.

How XKGLOW Lays Out 4, 8 and 12 Pods

All three diagrams share one skeleton. The controller sits at the front, Channel A runs down the left side, Channel B runs down the right, and each side's pods plug together in a chain.

12-pod Pro (MX-ROCK-PRO)6Four along the side, plus one angled around each corner4-channelIncluded

On a pickup, the rear wheels sit under the bed, and the rear pods of every layout sit there with them. XKGLOW's own kit photos show this on a Jeep Gladiator, with the rear wheel wells glowing under its bed. The kits are sized by layout, with no pod count published per truck model. Choose by coverage instead:

  • 4 pods put light at all four wheels.
  • 8 pods add two more per side between the wheels, filling each side from front to rear.
  • 12 pods bring the corners in. This kit alone ships with the key fob and two spare channels, C and D, labeled optional upgrades.

Step 2 of each instruction sheet is the real sizing tool. Stick each pod loosely where you think it belongs, using Scotch or painter's tape, and run the chasing patterns. Watch the hand-off from pod to pod. If the chase stutters between two spots, move the pods until it flows.

Planning Wire Runs on a Tacoma

Each side's chain starts at the controller up front and ends at the rearmost pod. Measure that run on your truck first, then check it against the wires in the box. The kit-detail images on the product page show them:

  • 4-pod: two 6 ft and two 13 ft wires
  • 8-pod: two each of 3, 6 and 13 ft
  • 12-pod: four 3 ft, two 6 ft and two 13 ft

If your runs need more, the option menu carries extra XKmax wires at 3, 6 and 13 ft, plus 1-to-2 XKmax splitters.

Power comes straight off the battery via the switch harness, red lead to the positive pole and black to the negative. Before mounting anything, chain every pod to the controller, connect the harness, turn the switch on and tap the touch button on the controller. If a pod shows a defect at this stage, XKGLOW asks you to contact it for a replacement.

The housekeeping step is short. Tie down loose wire with the screws or zip ties provided, route it away from heat and moving parts, and give the ON/OFF switch a dry, convenient spot. End caps seal any connector you leave open.

The controller also has three optional sensor wires for the truck's brake and turn signals. Join them to the matching vehicle wires using the T-taps in the box, and those actions work right away, because the controller comes with them set up. The app can reassign any sensor wire later, for example to a courtesy light.

Color and Control on the XKmax Kit

Each pod is addressable RGBW: RGB LEDs plus a dedicated white chip, inside an aluminum housing built for heat dissipation. The pods mix 16 million RGB colors, and XKGLOW rates them as much as 80% brighter than competitors. The product gallery marks them IP67 waterproof. With RGB and pure white in the same pod, you don't have to choose between the two kinds of rock light.

Every kit size runs on the XKmax app via Bluetooth. Inside it you get more than 28 pre-built chasing themes, each one adjustable in color, pattern, speed and brightness. A DIY builder covers anything custom. Music and Speed Sync drives the pods from what's playing, how fast you're moving or how hard you accelerate. A single controller splits the pods into as many as 10 zones, so different parts of the truck can run separately.

For quick access there is the 4-button RF key fob. Its buttons are set to Preset 1, Preset 2, Preset 3 and Off, and the app lets you customize them. The 12-pod Pro includes one, and the 4-pod and 8-pod kits offer it as an add-on.

Room for Up to 30 Pods

XKGLOW puts the ceiling for a single XKmax rock-light system at 30 pods. Extra pods come in 2-packs and 4-packs, and the option menu adds a 4-channel controller upgrade for the 4-pod and 8-pod kits. On the 12-pod Pro, channels C and D are already free. New pods need configuring in the XKmax app before they join the show.

Two Other XKGLOW Rock Kits That List Trucks

The RGB LED Truck Rock Light Kits come from XKchrome, XKGLOW's original app-controlled line, and run on the XKchrome app. They come in 4 or 8 pods. Each 6W pod is RGB, and either side flashes amber with its turn signal.

The Pure White Rock Light Kit skips color entirely. It uses 6W single-color white pods in 4, 8 or 12-pod kits, and its listing names no app. Its fitment line names trucks, Jeep, Bronco and UTVs.

Of the three, only the XKmax kit pairs color with a dedicated white chip, and only it runs on the XKmax app. Our truck rock light comparison sets it against four other brands, spec for spec.

Installing It Yourself or Handing It Off

XKGLOW lists a 2 to 3 hour install for the XKmax kit. Its instruction sheet advises having a licensed professional do the job, and its warranty clause says damage caused by improper installation voids coverage. Prefer a shop? The Find an Expert link on the product page leads to XKGLOW's dealer locator. XKGLOW's warranty policy also excludes labor for removal or reinstallation.

XKGLOW's own truck LED lights guide files rock light kits under the upgrades that add style. On a Tacoma, the work is in the layout: pick a kit size, tape it up, and let the chase show you where each pod belongs. Build yours today.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best rock lights for a Toyota Tacoma?

For a Tacoma you want to program, XKGLOW's strongest option is its XKmax RGBW kit. It pairs addressable RGBW pods with the XKmax app, 10 zones on a single controller, and room for 30 pods on one system. It is universal, so you plan the layout on your own truck.

How many rock lights should I get?

It depends on the coverage you want. In the three kit layouts, 4 pods light the wheels, 8 pods run a line down each side, and 12 pods add the front and rear corners. Tape the pods in place and run a chase before fastening anything. Add-on pods come in 2-packs and 4-packs.

Is 12 rock lights enough?

Twelve is the fullest kit layout: six pods per side, with the end pods angled around the corners. If you want more, one XKmax system takes up to 30 pods. The 12-pod Pro's controller also has two spare channels, marked as optional upgrades.

How much does it cost to get rock lights put in?

Expect the kit price plus any shop labor. The XKmax kit lists at $287.99 for 4 pods, $443.99 for 8 and $599.99 for 12, list prices at the time of writing. The XKchrome truck kit starts at $236.49 for 4 pods. The listed install time is 2 to 3 hours, and shop rates vary.
