Roll into a night meet with your wheel wells glowing and the questions start before the engine is off. Car rock lights put color exactly where the tires meet the pavement, and that is the first thing people notice.
XKGLOW's XKmax RGBW LED Rock Light Kit is a universal kit. Its product page calls it the best rock lights for trucks and Jeeps, and its fitment line names cars too. It comes in 4, 8 and 12-pod kits, all controlled from the XKmax app.
The question most car owners get stuck on is pod count. XKGLOW answers it in its own install manuals, which give each kit size a recommended layout.
What Rock Lights Do
Rock lights are compact LED pods that mount low on a vehicle and aim light at the ground. They come from the trail. XKGLOW builds its XKmax pods for off-road use and pitches them for lighting mud, rocks and any other terrain.
On a car, the job is mostly visual. Pods mounted near the wheels light the wheel wells and the pavement around the tires, which puts the car's stance on display after dark. XKGLOW's own kit photos show the pods doing exactly that.
Color is the other half of the job. The XKmax pods are addressable RGBW, meaning RGB LEDs plus dedicated white chips. You can run a chasing pattern at a show, match a color to your paint, or switch to pure white. Three sensor wires let the pods react to your turn signals, brakes and courtesy lights.
The XKmax RGBW Rock Light Kit at a Glance
Every XKmax pod sits in an aluminum housing built for durability and heat dissipation. XKGLOW lists the pods as IP67 waterproof and rates its RGB plus pure white LEDs up to 80% brighter than competitors. A full 12-pod kit draws well under 65 watts by XKGLOW's own per-pod rating.
| 4-pod Standard | 8-pod Advanced | 12-pod Pro | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pods | 4 | 8 | 12 |

| RF key fob | Sold separately | Sold separately | Included |
| List price at time of writing | $287.99 | $443.99 | $599.99 |
Day to day, the XKmax app runs the kit over Bluetooth, and a 4-button key fob can hold quick-access presets you program. The app carries 28+ pre-built chasing themes and a DIY builder. Music and Speed Sync ties the lights to your music, your speed or your acceleration. One controller handles up to 10 lighting zones, and XKGLOW lists the install at 2 to 3 hours.
How Many Rock Light Pods Does a Car Need?
XKGLOW doesn't publish a pod count by car size, and you don't need one. The right number depends on how much of the car you want lit. Every layout in the XKmax manuals runs one controller channel down each side of the vehicle, with the pods chained along it.
4 pods: the wheel-well glow
The 4-pod layout puts two pods on each side, one toward the front and one toward the rear. Each one sits by a wheel, so you get the classic look: lit wheel wells with less light between them. It is the simplest way to start.
8 pods: a full side line
The 8-pod layout runs four pods in a row down each side. The extra pods fill the stretch between the wheels, so the whole side reads as one line of light. It uses the same 2-channel controller as the smallest kit.
12 pods: wrapped corners
The 12-pod layout puts six pods on each side, and the end pods angle around the front and rear corners so the light wraps the car. This is the only kit with the 4-channel controller and the RF key fob in the box. XKGLOW's wiring diagram runs the pods on two channels and labels the other two "optional upgrades."
Past 12 pods
The product page sells extra XKmax pods in 2-packs and 4-packs, and XKGLOW confirms one XKmax rock-light system runs up to 30 pods. The option menu also offers a 4-channel controller upgrade, which matters on the 4-pod and 8-pod kits since the Pro already ships with one. The same option menu sells extra 3, 6 and 13 ft XKmax wires for longer runs.
Test the layout before you fasten anything
XKGLOW's manual gives you a practical way to settle the layout on your own car. You tape the pods loosely in place with Scotch or painter's tape, then run the chasing patterns. If the transitions look uneven, move the pods until the chase flows smoothly. If a gap still bothers you, that is your case for the next kit size or an add-on pair.
Installing Rock Lights on a Car
The XKmax manual follows the same order for every kit size:
- Test everything first. Plug every pod into the controller and switch harness, connect the harness to the battery, switch it on, and press the controller's touch button.
- Plan the locations. Disconnect the kit from the battery, remove any bodywork the pods will sit behind, clean the surface, and tape the pods loosely.
- Pick a wiring method. Surface mounting routes the wire through channels in a rubber grommet and out the side of the pod. Through-hole wiring feeds it through a 1/2-inch hole when you can reach behind the panel.
- Fasten and tidy. The pods secure with the self-tapping screws, or with your own nuts and bolts. Keep loose wire away from anything hot or moving, and mount the on/off switch somewhere dry.
- Tap the sensor wires (optional). Use the included T-tap connectors as the manual shows, and the brake and turn-signal actions come preset in the controller.
XKGLOW recommends a licensed professional for the install. To find a shop, follow the Find an Expert link on the product page to XKGLOW's dealer locator.
Which XKGLOW Rock Kit Fits a Car Build
XKGLOW still sells the older XKchrome RGB LED Rock Light Kits in 4 and 8 pods. Each 6W pod runs RGB with no dedicated white chip, and the lights auto blink amber with your turn signal. Control runs through the XKchrome app.
For a car build, the XKmax kit is the stronger pick. Its pods add true white to 16 million RGB colors, and addressable LEDs drive the chasing patterns. It is the only one of the two sold as a 12-pod kit, and it grows to 30 pods on one system.
Build Your Car's Rock Light Kit
If rock lights are your first step into car LED lights, the 4-pod kit puts a glow at every wheel on the same XKmax app as the bigger kits. Want light along the whole side? Go straight to 8. For corners, the fob and two spare channels, the 12-pod Pro is the one. Tape your layout, watch the chase, and add pods when the build asks for more. Build yours today.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to get rock lights put in?
For XKGLOW's XKmax kit, list prices run from $287.99 for 4 pods to $599.99 for 12 at the time of writing. XKGLOW rates the install at 2 to 3 hours and recommends a licensed professional. Labor depends on the shop, so get a quote, or find an installer through XKGLOW's dealer locator.
Will rock lights drain your battery?
Like any accessory, they can if you leave them on with the engine off. By XKGLOW's own per-pod rating, even a full 12-pod kit tops out under 65 watts. The kit wires to the battery through an on/off switch harness, so switch it off after a parked show.
Is there a difference between underglow and rock lights?
Yes. Rock lights are compact pods mounted at points around the vehicle, while underglow uses long strips or tubes for a continuous wash under the body. XKGLOW's XKmax Underbody Kit, for example, uses eight 24-inch tubes. Both run on the XKmax app, and the rock kit's add-on menu includes 12-inch and 24-inch XKmax tubes.
Is it illegal to have rock lights on your car?
It depends on where you live. Rules vary by state, so check yours before wiring them up. New York's Vehicle and Traffic Law says "No light, other than a white light, ... shall be affixed to, or displayed on any vehicle except as prescribed herein." XKGLOW's manual also says to check local and state laws.
