Look at the front of a Harley-Davidson at a stoplight and you will probably see a white halo glowing inside the turn signals. XKGLOW calls those halo inserts the industry standard for about two decades. Its MotoTurnz Pro Series inserts keep the halo, add star patterns and animated turn modes you set with a magnet, and throw in a parked light show.

If you are shopping for turn signals for a motorcycle that already wears Harley bullet or flat style housings, this upgrade changes the face and keeps the hardware. The Front MotoTurnz Pro Series LED Turn Signal Inserts and the Rear MotoTurnz Pro Series inserts each list at $179.99 at the time of writing.

What a Turn Signal Insert Does on a Harley

A MotoTurnz Pro insert takes the place of the incandescent bulb inside your stock signal housing. XKGLOW's instruction sheet has you pop the lens off, pull the old bulb, clean the socket, and install the insert. The housing stays on the bike.

Once it is in, the insert does two jobs. As a running light, it holds whichever pattern you picked, from a classic Single Halo to a Full Amber face up front. In Simple Mode, a signal lights every LED on the face solid amber up front or solid red at the rear, just as the factory bulb does.

XKGLOW rates the front bulbs at 6 watts and the rear bulbs at 3 watts, on a 9 to 32 volt DC input. The look is the real reason to buy, though. As XKGLOW puts it, you still get the halo, and if you want a new setup three months from now, you tap the lens for a whole new look.

Front vs Rear: What Each MotoTurnz Pro Insert Does

XKGLOW sells the front and rear inserts as separate listings, and each product page links to the other. Both come in the same four bulb and housing versions, listed under fitment below.

Front (XK-MTP-F). You get eight running-light settings: Single Halo, Double Halo, Inner Halo, Simple Star, Halo Star, Amber Star, Full Amber, and Combo Star. Wire it in Advanced Mode and you add Bike Night Mode plus six turn modes. Those are Single Blink, Double Blink, Sequence On, Sequence Off, Bounce, and Outward Flow.

Rear (XK-MTP-R). The rear runs its own eight running-light settings: Single Halo, Double Halo, Triple Halo, Simple Star, Halo Star, Outer Star, Ninja Star, and Full Dim. Advanced Mode unlocks eight turn modes, adding Star On and Shooting Star to the front's six, plus Bike Night Mode.

The rear also gets an optional brake flash that blinks three times before holding solid. It is off by default. The 1156 rear inserts have no brake function, so only the 1157 rear versions cover brake duty.

How You Change Settings: Tap a Magnet, No App

MotoTurnz Pro runs without an app, which sets it apart from XKGLOW's app-controlled motorcycle lighting. Settings live on an on-board magnetic switch, and a magnet keychain comes in the box. With the ignition on, the instruction sheet lays it out like this:

  • Running light: quick-tap the magnet to the center of the lens to step to the next setting.
  • Turn mode (Advanced Mode): hold the magnet on the lens for 3 seconds. The new pattern plays three times to confirm it.
  • Brake flash (rear, Advanced Mode): hold the magnet on the lens for more than 5 seconds to switch it on or off.

Repeat it on each insert. Each one holds its setting until you change it, and you may need to twist an insert so a star pattern sits upright. Lose the magnet and the instruction sheet says any magnet strong enough will do.

Bike Night Mode is the parked party trick. Switch the ignition on and back off within half a second, and a series of animations loops on the inserts. Turn the key back on, or simply ride away, and it stops. To protect the battery, it times out after an hour.

Simple Mode or Advanced Mode: How the Install Works

XKGLOW lists the install at under an hour. The instruction sheet gives you two ways to wire the inserts, and the features you get depend on which one you pick.

Simple Mode is plug and play, like any other bulb. You get every running-light setting through the magnet, and the signal lights solid. Snip the extra wires but leave an inch or two, in case you switch to Advanced Mode later. Simple Mode needs resistors or a load equalizer to prevent hyperflash.

Advanced Mode adds a power harness. The bulb wires join the harness, a blue wire taps an ignition-switched 12V source, and the harness connects to the battery. Some housings need a small drilled hole for the wire, sealed with RTV silicone.

This is the mode that unlocks the turn patterns, Bike Night Mode, and the rear brake flash. The inserts flash correctly here without extra parts. Your dash indicator will blink fast, though, unless you add the same hyperflash fix.

Running an 1156 base? The instruction sheet also has you route a white wire from the insert to a running-light power circuit.

One line is worth reading before you grab tools. The instruction sheet's warranty section says installation must be performed by a licensed professional, and it treats improper installation as grounds to void the warranty. The product page lists the job at under an hour, so if you would rather hand it off, it also links XKGLOW's dealer locator.

Which Harley Signals MotoTurnz Pro Fits

XKGLOW lists fitment by signal style and bulb base: bullet or flat style, 1157 or 1156. The listing is for Harley-Davidson motorcycles and carries no model-year chart. Pull one lens and check your housing shape and bulb base before you order.

The SKUs follow the same split. Bullet Style 1157, for example, is XK-MTP57-BF up front and XK-MTP57-BR at the rear.

Riding something other than a Harley? XKGLOW's universal options are the Mini Turnz kit, listed as universal for 12V motorcycles, and the Blade Pro signals, sold as a pair for any motorcycle, UTV or ATV.

MotoTurnz Pro vs XKGLOW's 1157 Halo Kits

XKGLOW also sells simpler halo kits, and they are the budget route to the look. The Motorcycle Front LED Turn Signal Kit 1157 runs a bright white halo DRL with switchback amber for the turn signal. The Motorcycle Rear LED Turn Signal Kit runs a red halo ring for running on 1157 bulbs and goes full-on for turn and brake.

Both kits list fitment for Harley bullet and flat style turn signals, with clear or smoked lenses. XKGLOW calls them a 5-minute install: remove the lens, replace the bulb, and fit the new lens. Both pages note that resistors may be necessary to prevent hyperflash.

The difference is control. Each kit does one look, and neither page lists selectable settings. The Pro inserts give you eight running-light looks per insert, animated turn modes, and Bike Night Mode.

Price, Box Contents, and Warranty

At the time of writing, each Pro listing is $179.99, so a full front and rear setup runs $359.98. The 1157 kits list at $89.99 each. The Pro inserts come with the magnet keychain and clear lenses. For warranty coverage, check the terms on each product page before you buy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you replace a 1157 bulb with LED?

Yes. MotoTurnz Pro comes in 1157 versions that take the place of the incandescent bulb in a Harley signal housing. You pop the lens, pull the old bulb, and install the insert. If you wire it in Simple Mode, plan on a hyperflash fix as well.

Can I use an 1156 bulb instead of an 1157?

Use the base your housing takes. XKGLOW sells MotoTurnz Pro in both 1157 and 1156 versions, so match what you pull out. The 1156 rear inserts have no brake function, per the product page. Either end also needs a white wire routed to a running-light power circuit on an 1156.

Do I need a load equalizer for LED turn signals?

With MotoTurnz Pro, it depends on the install. In Simple Mode, XKGLOW's instruction sheet says you need resistors or a load equalizer to prevent hyperflash. In Advanced Mode, the inserts flash correctly without one. Your dash indicator will blink fast, though, unless you add resistors or an equalizer.

What are the best bike turn signals?

For a Harley, XKGLOW's answer is MotoTurnz Pro. You get eight running-light settings you change with the included magnet. Advanced Mode wiring adds up to eight turn modes and Bike Night Mode. On other 12V motorcycles, XKGLOW's universal Mini Turnz kit is the alternative.
