Open the door at night and the footwells light up in clean white while a line of color chases across the dash. That is the payoff of car interior LED lights, installed right.
Figuring out how to install LED lights in your car interior starts with the kit, because each XKmax kit installs differently. XKGLOW's XKmax line has three: RGBW flex strips for the floor, fiber-optic strips for the dash and doors, and the ULTRA kit for the whole cabin. All three run on the XKmax app, with themes, effects, and music sync.

RGBW Strips for the Floor
The Interior Kit is the interior-only tier of the XKmax LED Underglow Light Kit. XKGLOW builds its strips with an IP67, impact-resistant design "for underglow and interior lighting use." Each strip pairs RGB chips with dedicated white chips, so you get pure white as well as color. This is the LED strip inside your car that washes the floor with light.
Fiber Optic for the Dash and Doors
The XKmax RGB Fiber Optic LED Interior Ambient Light Kit uses ultra-slim, trimmable strips that press into the gaps in your dash and door panels. Its LEDs are addressable RGB, with no dedicated white chip. XKGLOW names the four kits for where they go: Dash, 2 Doors, 4 Doors, and Dash + 4 Doors.
The Full Cabin: ULTRA
The ULTRA interior kit (MX-FO-ULTRA) combines both strip types. Fiber optic runs along the interior body panels, while the flexible LED strips light the footwells and door pockets. It is designed for four-door vehicles, including sedans and SUVs. Four add-on packages extend it to the center console, footwells, seat backs, and door armrest pockets.
Tools and Prep
XKGLOW's manuals recommend a licensed professional for the install. Each kit page also links a dealer locator under "Need Install Help? Find an Expert." Doing it yourself? Check three things first.
- Inspect your panels. The fiber-optic manuals warn the strips could require removing dash and door trim, and in extreme cases cutting trim or dash surfaces. Only a never-installed kit can be returned.
- Know what comes in the box. The kits ship with a controller, a switch wiring harness, T-tap connectors, and screws or zip ties. The fiber kits add plastic pry tools, double-sided tape, and heat shrink.
- Bring your own extras. The Interior Kit manual has you dry-fit with painter's tape, which is not included. The fiber manuals call for sharp scissors, a tape measure, and a heat gun.
How to Install the RGBW Interior Kit
Follow the MX-CAR-MINI manual's order when installing interior lights in a car:
- Test everything first. Connect all four strips to the controller and the cigarette plug switch, then plug the switch into your car's cigarette lighter socket. With the car and switch on, push the touch button. Report any defect to XKGLOW before mounting.
- Dry-fit the layout. Remove any trim panels that will hide lights or wiring, then clean the surfaces. Tape the strips loosely in place and run chasing patterns to check for smooth transitions.
- Follow the diagram. The manual puts the strips in the front and rear footwells, with Channel A on the left and Channel B on the right. Skipping the rear footwells? Move those strips to the front for more brightness.
- Mount the strips. Clean again and check orientation: the strips are directional, with an input and an output side. Peel the 3M tape, press them on, and add zip ties for support.
- Plug in the extension wires. Connect the extensions and the switch wiring harness as the wiring diagram shows. Never force a plug: if it will not snap together, check that all the pins line up.
- Secure the wiring. Hide loose wire with the provided screws or zip ties, away from anything hot or moving. Tuck the controller away and cap unused connectors with the provided end caps.
- Tap sensor wires (optional). Give each of the three sensor wires an action in the XKmax app (Config, then Sensor Wires). Tap each into a matching 12V positive wire with the included T-taps. A courtesy-light trigger taps a positive door-light wire.
- Power up and pair. Make the 12V DC connection; the wiring diagram feeds the controller through the cigarette plug switch. Then install the XKmax app and point it at the manual's QR code, which loads the preset for your kit.
How to Install the Fiber-Optic Kit
The MX-FO kit follows the same test-first logic, with more trim work:
- Bench test on a battery. Connect all strips to the controller and switch harness. Connect the red terminal to the positive pole of a 12V battery and the black to the negative, then test with the touch button.
- Plan and measure. Plan the line on the dash or door panel, pulling trim where needed. Measure each strip laid flat and write down the length in inches. Cut with sharp scissors only if needed, then remeasure.
- Press the strips in. Use the pry tools to open the panel gaps and the double-sided tape where needed. Connect the LED driver, then seal the small white plugs with heat shrink and a heat gun.
- Secure wires and mount the switch. Hide loose wire with screws or zip ties. Put the ON/OFF switch somewhere dry and convenient.
- Reinstall the trim. The gaps may be tight now, so make sure no strip or wire gets pinched.
- Connect power. Run the terminals to a positive 12V source and a vehicle ground. Power on, then scan the manual's QR code in the XKmax app to load the preset. The sensor wires come with no actions preset.
- Match cut strips in the app (optional). Multiply each new length in inches by 3.4 and round up. A 14-inch strip works out to 48 addressable units. Enter that count so gradients and patterns land right.
Installing the ULTRA Interior Kit
The ULTRA kit uses the same fiber steps, plus one hard rule. Each controller channel is pre-programmed for the lights in the manual's wiring diagram. Connect every component exactly as drawn, because straying from that layout may stop some lights from working.
The listing puts the job at over four hours. In the app, the kit splits into up to 10 independent lighting zones.
Check Your State's Rules Before You Drive Lit
Proper use is on you: the interior kit manuals point you to your local and state laws. Rules vary by state, so read your own vehicle code. Two examples:
- California: Vehicle Code section 24003 says no lamp shall "be mounted inside a vehicle unless specifically permitted by this code." It exempts interior lamps "designed and used for the purpose of illuminating the interior of the vehicle."
- Arizona: Revised Statutes 28-947 bars driving on a highway with a lamp or device that can show red, or red and blue, light to the front. It adds that lights "visible from the front of a vehicle shall be amber or white." The same section prohibits flashing lights on motor vehicles outside its listed exceptions.
Build Out the Rest of the Car
For the dome light, XKGLOW's LED Dome Light Bulb Kit directly replaces the existing bulb and runs on the separate XKchrome app. The XKmax Slim Flexible RGBW strip adds more strips later, but only to XKmax series products, and added lights need configuring in the app.
Driving a Wrangler or Gladiator? The Jeep interior LED lights guide sizes the fiber-optic kit by door count. The car LED lights guide covers the rest of the lineup. Build yours today.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install LED lights inside my car?
Yes. XKGLOW's XKmax interior kits plug together, mount with tape or into panel gaps, and pair with the XKmax app. The listings give 2 to 3 hours for the underglow kit family, 1 to 6 hours for the fiber-optic kit, and over 4 hours for ULTRA. The manuals still recommend a licensed professional.
Is it illegal to drive with LED lights inside your car?
It depends on your state. California's section 24003 restricts lamps mounted inside a vehicle but exempts interior lamps "designed and used for the purpose of illuminating the interior of the vehicle." Arizona says lights visible from the front "shall be amber or white." XKGLOW's manuals tell you to check local and state laws.
How much would it cost to put LED lights in my car?
At the time of writing, XKGLOW lists the Interior Kit at $179.99 and the fiber-optic kits from $191.99 to $455.99. The ULTRA interior kit lists at $499.99 before add-on packages. Shop labor is separate and not listed. For a professional install, the product pages point you to XKGLOW's dealer locator.
How can I control multicolor car interior lights with my phone?
On an XKmax kit, the XKmax app is the control: power on, then use it to scan the QR code in your kit's manual, which loads the preset. From there you pick colors, themes, and music sync. The ULTRA kit includes an RF key fob; on the other two, the 4-button fob is an add-on.
