Hit the key fob in a dark parking lot and a band of color sweeps along your hood line, then races down both sides of the car. That is what exterior car LED strip lights are for: they trace the body, not the cabin.
XKGLOW builds that look with the XKmax Atomix Universal Accent Strip Light Kit, addressable RGB strips made for the gaps between body panels. Every kit includes a controller and one RF key fob. The XKmax app on your phone handles the rest.
Exterior Strips and Interior Strips Do Different Jobs
Search for car LED strip lights and the results mix two products. Some strips light footwells and dashboards from inside the car. Others mount on the body, out in the weather, where people outside the car see them.
Atomix belongs to the second group: exterior LED strip lights for cars. XKGLOW designed it to fit into body panel gaps on cars, trucks, ATVs, and UTVs, including hoods, running boards, and trunk doors. The strips are built from durable, waterproof materials and attach with the 3M adhesive tape in the box. You can trim each one to length so it fits the gap cleanly.
Lighting the cabin is a separate project with its own kits, covered in our guide to installing interior LED lights in your car.

Addressable is the spec that sets these apart from a single-color strip. The controller drives each strip in short units, one for every 2 inches of length. That is what lets a pattern travel from one end of the hood to the other.
Atomix has no white LED of its own; it is an RGB strip, so buy it for moving color. It is accent lighting for the body, not a work light.
Four Atomix Kits, One for Each Body Line
Each kit's name tells you its spot on the car. These are car body LED strip lights in four sizes:
| Kit (SKU) | Strips | Controller | List price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grille / Trunk (MX-BG-MINI) | One 80-inch | 2-channel | $185.99 |
| Hood / Door Panel (MX-BG-STA) | Two 49-inch | 2-channel | $203.99 |
| Running Board (MX-BG-ADV) | Two 80-inch | 2-channel | $257.99 |
| Hood + Running Board (MX-BG-PRO) | Two 49-inch, two 80-inch | 4-channel | $395.99 |
Prices are XKGLOW's list prices as of this writing.
Grille / Trunk. A single 80-inch strip for one end of the car. It works at the front or the rear, with the plug end on the right side. For a rear mount, the mounting instructions route the kit's extension wires to the back of the vehicle. Its controller's second channel is labeled for optional upgrades.
Hood / Door Panel. Two 49-inch strips, one for each side. Run them along the hood edges or the door panel gaps. If you were shopping for a car door LED light strip, this is the kit.
Running Board. Two 80-inch strips for the long lines down each side. Many cars have no running boards; measure the lower body line you plan to light before you order.
Hood + Running Board. All four strips on a 4-channel controller. At list price it costs $65.99 less than buying the Hood / Door Panel and Running Board kits separately, which totals $461.98.
Extra XKmax wires are a checkout add-on in 3, 6, and 13-foot sizes, two or four per order.
Color, Zones, and Sensor Wires in the XKmax App
The app pairs with the controller over Bluetooth. A QR code printed for each kit loads the light map for that exact kit.
From there you choose among 28-plus chasing themes. Change any theme's colors, pattern, speed, or brightness, or build a custom one with the DIY builder. The sync feature follows music, vehicle speed, or acceleration, and XKGLOW lists it as compatible with third-party apps. The app instructions list third-party streaming music, your phone's microphone, or music loaded into the app as sources.
A single controller handles as many as 10 lighting zones. On the Hood + Running Board kit, split the hood strips from the side strips and each zone can carry its own color or effect.
The three sensor wires come preset. By default, red triggers on the brakes, yellow on the left turn signal, and black on the right. You can reassign each wire in the app, for example to courtesy lighting. Startup mode is programmable too, so you decide what the strips show at power-on.
Want a second fob for another keychain? Extra fobs are a $16.79 add-on, and the app instructions allow up to four fobs per controller.
Installing Atomix Strips on a Car
The mounting instructions break the job into seven numbered steps:
- Test before you mount. Plug every strip into the controller, add the switch wiring harness, and wire the harness to a 12V battery. Flip the switch on, then push the touch button on the controller. Contact XKGLOW about any defect first.
- Plan, and cut only if needed. Disconnect the tested lights from the battery and clean each panel edge. Tape the strips on loosely with masking tape; on the two- and four-strip kits, the plug ends point toward the rear. If a strip is too long, trim it with sharp scissors and seal the cut end with silicone (not included). Note the new length in inches.
- Mount the strips. Peel the 3M tape and press each strip on with its lit side facing the panel gap.
- Secure the wiring. Tidy loose wires with the supplied screws or zip ties, clear of anything hot or moving. Cap unused connectors and put the on/off switch in a dry, easy-to-reach spot.
- Tap the sensor wires (optional). The kit's T-tap connectors splice them into the circuits you choose. Write down which color went where.
- Power up. Wire the harness terminals to the battery poles. Install the XKmax app and scan your kit's QR code to load its preset.
- Enter cut lengths (optional). Take each new length in inches, halve it, and enter the result as the addressable unit count. A strip cut to 30 inches becomes 15 units.
That last step keeps gradients and patterns showing correctly on shortened strips.
The mounting instructions recommend having a licensed professional do the installation, and the warranty printed there excludes damage from improper installation. Prefer a shop? The "Find an Expert" link on the product page opens XKGLOW's dealer locator. The same document asks you to look up local and state laws on using the kit.
Warranty and Support
Register the kit to activate coverage, and read the warranty terms on the Atomix product page itself. Where a product page lists its own term, XKGLOW's warranty policy defers to it. Coverage applies to products bought from XKGLOW or an authorized dealer, and XKGLOW gives free lifetime support to every customer.
Choosing Your Atomix Kit
Pick the kit by the line you want people to see. One accent at the front or rear calls for Grille / Trunk. Hood edges or door gaps call for Hood / Door Panel. Long side lines call for Running Board, and the full outline calls for Hood + Running Board.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you put LED lights on the outside of your car?
Yes, and XKGLOW's Atomix kit is made for exactly that. Its strips mount in body panel gaps on the hood, doors, trunk, or running boards, held by 3M tape. Every strip can be cut shorter to fit. XKGLOW also reminds you to look up your local and state laws for proper use.
What are the best LED strip lights for exterior use?
The best exterior strips are addressable and waterproof, made to mount in body gaps, and run from a controller you can program. XKGLOW's XKmax Atomix kit fits that description. Its addressable RGB strips are built from waterproof materials, and a single controller drives up to 10 zones from the XKmax app or a key fob.
How to attach LED strip lights outside?
Clean the surface, stick the strips on with double-sided tape, and secure the wiring. Atomix strips carry 3M double-sided tape on the back. Wipe the panel edge clean, face the lit side toward the gap, and press each strip into place. The kit's screws or zip ties then hold the loose wires.
